Depressing News? Find Inspiration in the Commercials!

27 Jan

At my work, my boss always keeps the TV tuned to CNN, captions on, volume off. I usually catch a glimpse of whatever is going on when there’s a slight break, which can be very depressing. Yesterday, the stories reported included the never-ending snowfall in the Northeast, a serial killer near NYC, protests in Egypt, a predicted very lengthy recovery for Ms. Giffords, and the identification of a 15-year old babysitter’s body in Lubock. Does anyone else find CNN, or the news in general, informative, yet a real optimism crusher?

Well, that’s just the bad news. Literally…

Here’s the good news! You can find inspiration in commercials! Here is a quote that flashed across the screen as CNN broke for a commercial break. Not sure what company or organization it was for, but it’s something to think about and inspire you today:

“Faith is taking the first step, even when you don’t see the whole staircase.”

-Martin Luther King, Jr.

Have you ever found inspiration during an unlikely time? Has a commercial ever inspired you? Good news is hard to find these days; good commercials are even harder.

Conquering an eating disorder is like getting to the top of the Empire State Building… taking the stairwell! Daunting, especially when you can’t see every step involved with weight restoration, relearning how to nourish your body properly, overcoming the anxieties, facing the fears of the past, and coping with the obsession our society has with dieting and thinness. But the challenge is to take the next step… eat just this meal or skip the power-walking in favor of a slow stroll. Don’t worry about the future and what seems like an insurmountable staircase. You will see those steps when the time comes. For now, take it one step at a time.
